How to remove OS from OS selection boot screen.

Charles Tomaras

For a while I had a dual boot situation going with two WinXP installations
on different hard drives. I now only have one yet I still get the OS
selection screen when booting up and have to select between the valid XP
installation and the invalid XP installation that doesn't even exist. How do
I disable the invalid selection and do away with the screen entirely? (I
assume if only one OS selection is present the screen will probably not
appear)

Thanks!

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not work for you:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then look similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

| Even though your fix worked for me Nicholas...why did it take you a full 4
| minutes to solve my problem and post? I'm sick of these slow and tired
| newsgroups....wish I had spent $35 on an MS tech support call instead. :)

OK, because I'm an animal lover, you are forgiven this time.
