How to reinstall 2000 and its SPs?

There are 4 SPs. Are they all critical, or is it only necessary to
install 2000 Gold and then SP4? Or do I have to install in sequence
SP1, 2, 3, and 4? Or some subset of them?

I especially ask because with XP, it seems that it is necessary to
first install SP1 or SP2, and only then SP3. Even though it seems
every file in SP1 or SP2 except two files with SP1 and SP2 in their
names (SP1.exe and SP2.exe), are in SP3. The gurus I asked didn't
know why. :)

Off topic:
(I recently avoided reinstalling my XP, when I found the problem was
ZoneAlarm. My specific problem was that I could access the web with
IE and FF3 for 7** minutes after Windows fully started, but no longer.
All I had to do to fix all but one XP problem was to delete or rename
the "Internet logs" directory under Windows, and let it start making
another one. It seems this folder belongs totally to Zone Alarm, so
why don't they call it "Zone Alarm Logs" so people like me will no
where to look when there are problems?

(**I couldnt' figure out search terms for this problem, but I finally
tried XP web "ten minutes" which seemed better than 7
minutes, and the first two out of three hits were about people who
could acceess the web for only 10 minutes. And unlike some
solution-seeking webpages, both of these had lots of solutions,
including one that said to uninstall ZoneAlarm and detailed directions
on how to do it. That included renaming the "internet logs" directory,
so that it woudln't be deleted and I could name it back after un- and
reinstalling ZoneAlarm. So I renamed it while in win98 on the same
box, and as soon as I restarted XP, it worked, without uninstalling
Zone Alarm. Whoop-de-doo!

Hello MM,

With Windows 2000 just use the latest SP and then all updates from windowsupdate.com.

The latest will do in both cases.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

(Note: If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want
to boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very
important (at setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive
controller detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later
you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver
for your drive controller in drive "A")

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows 2000 Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply SP4 and these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network. Internet included. (sasser, msblast)

Interesting. A couple webpages and at least two or three people in
the windowsxp.general newsgroup think either sp1 or sp2 have to be
installed before SP3 can.

It seemed like a strange lack of similarity to me.

I asked my question early, because I"m not quite ready to go yet, but
I've saved the rest of this for when I am.
