How to Open Word document link with Word

G

Guest

I have some Word (.doc & .dot) links on my web page that I want to have open
with Word instead of inside Internet Explorer when the hyperlink is selected.
Is there a setting on the web page or site that I can change or link to it
another way or would this be a setting in internet explorer?

Thank you for your help.

Not possible except on an Intranet (where all users have changed their PC registry settings)

Click the link, and the document should (will) open in Word if the person
has Word on their computer - it is opening within Word, within the browser
(not necessarily IE).

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I understand that it is using word within internet explorer and from
the link that Stefan supplied, I got the doc's to open in a word window
instead of inside IE. I'm still having a problem with template files. See my
reply to Stefan..

Thanks,

Rick

Thanks for your reply, this got me half way there.

This is on my internal Intranet site. I am running the web site on SBS
2003. All my workstations are WinXP SP2. Half have MS Office 2002 and the
other half have MS Office 2003.

I changed the Advanced setting under Folder options and the .doc and .dot
files do open now in a seperate Word window, but it is still not right. I
have some templates that use fillin fields which prompt the user with an
input box for different fields within the template. These work fine when
opened with Windows Explorer because it opens a new .doc file from the
template, but when opened from an Intranet web page, they do not work because
it is editing the template instead of opening a new .doc file using the
template layout.

After more testing, I found when a .dot file is opened from inside word
using the File/Open menu option and browse to a .dot file to open, this will
just edit the template the same way it does when opened through the web page
hyperlink. How can I get it to work like when you double click the .dot file
in Windows Explorer?

All assistance is greatly appreciated,

Rick

Create a blank document ( .doc ) from the template, and place the .doc on
the web instead of the template file.
I think the .doc should retain the field functionality.

I tried to create a .doc from the template, but when I opened the .doc
version of it, it did not prompt me for the fillin fields. Any other ideas?

Add a note next to the link prompting the user to right-click the link and
use "Save Target As" to force a download of the template file.

OR place each template in a .zip file, so they will download, then the user
must extract them to use them.

Thanks for the citation ... we'll try that, since we only use Word on our
intranet.

BUT ... let me kvetch that the "open in browser" feature with Office 2003 is
a Really Bad Idea. It has been a Really Bad Idea with Adobe PDFs for years
.... why did Microsoft do the same?

For one, we mostly have forms that we want opening in Word, not IE.

For two, this type of thing is confusing to assistive technology. Screen
readers don't know whether to apply browser or Word rules.

grrrrr.....
