How to open a new doc with the font I want?

When I open Word 2007 it offers me a Document1 with font MS Mincho size 10.5.
How can I get the initial blank offering to already be set to, say, Verdana
12?

Several ways... In the Home tab, click on the Font launcher (lower right
corner of the Font section in the ribbon). There, set the font & size as
desired, then click Default...

Or... press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S to display the Styles pane. At the bottom,
click the Manage Styles tool; click the Set Defaults tab. Click "New
documents based on this template", set the font & size as desired, and click
OK. Note that the latter approach provides access to setting other defaults,
as well.

With either of the ways, I end up with the Normal in this image:

So I was able to change the font size to 12, but couldn't set Verdana.

And now Style 1, 2, 3, 4, and V12 all give me Verdana 12. (See
<http://www.rcblue.com/Misc/Word_Ribbon_Style1_is_Verdana_12.png>.) If I
can't change Normal to exactly what I want, I can live with V12. But how to
delete the identical Styles 1, 2, 3, and 4?

I have the Language Pack - Japanese ($25 from MS). Is that why Nomal
inisists on giving me an Asian font by default -- and a default that
seemingly can't be changed?
