How to Network Konica.Minolta 1350W Laser Printer?

G

geezer

I can't imagine what I am doing wrong.

I have two WXP PRO (SP2) machines, successfully networked together. I
have complete file-sharing capability. I also have two printers, an
Epson R320 and a HP950 All-In-One, both successfully shared by both
machines. I can share the printers and the files both ways - that is,
each machine can share the other's files, and if I go to the trouble
of manually switching the printer USB connections from one machine to
the other, then the printers are sharable whichever way I choose.

So I feel that I have my networking set up correctly, including
printer sharing (at least for the Epson and the HP).

I have installed and used my new Konica/Minolta 1350W Laser Printer on
each machine independently just fine. However, when I set up printer
sharing for the laser printer, just like I did for the other two
printers, although I select the 'port' as the networked name on the
remote machine (just like I did for the other printers), the laser
will not print. In fact the spooled output just sits, and I have to
manually cancel (delete) it.

I am beginning to wonder if this printer is, in fact, net workable?

I sure can use some help here.

Thanks

I think you need the 1350WN model for networking, I don't own one but I read
a review some time back on this problem.

what if you browse to the machine with the Konica/Minolta and see if
it's using a different name for the share... this is more a problem of
printer/file sharing than with the laser, since it runs off either PC
fine

Nope they are and were the same, namely LASER1350W.
Thanks for trying.

Hmmm
I'll see if I can find a web page reflecting what you say.

It looks to me from googling for info that there is a NIC interface
card for the printer, but I don't think that will be what I want or
need. The 1350WN seems to have that NIC built in.

My printer is USB-connected the port for which should be reachable
through WXP's printer sharing. Just like other printers.

So I must still have something wrong somewhere.

Thanks

Geezer

Sorry if I misintrepeted your post, it would seem that you are using p2p
setup on USB ports and I was assuming you were on a LAN requiring network
interface cards,
Cat 5 cables and RJ45 connectors, and A Network enabled printer.
The other poster is probably correct in saying it sounds more like a print
sharing problem than a printer problem.

I may have an answer for you. You need a print server, and you need some
specific models, like Linksys WPS54GUW2 and PPS1UW. I don't have your
printer but a KM color laser. WPS54GUW2 works well for me.

I am surprised that I may need something like a 'print server' for the
laser whereas I don't need same for my other printers (all deskjets).
But maybe I do.

I googled WPS54GUW2 and found nothing. I did find other servers that
seem to be incorporated into routers, such as D-Link. That caused me
to remember that my old D-Link does have a PARALLEL printer connector
on it, and it works will for my old parallel printer. So, I'll try
the parallel connector on the Laser, even though I would prefer USB-2.

Well - I believe I am at the end of my rope,
Still cannot network the 1350W.

To review:
1) I have two machines that I consider my server and my satellite.
2) The server is a P4 Pentium 2.4, The satellite is a AMD ATHLON64.
3) Both are running WXP PRO SP2.
4) They are linked via CAT5 to a D-LINK DI-704P router that also has a
parallel connector.
5) The machines are setup up for printer (other printers) & file
sharing.
6) All sharing seems to work fine for all files and for other printers
that I happen to have. Those printers are USB or PARALLEL, in some
cases both.
7) One parallel printer even works fine via the D-LINK on both
machines.
8) Both machines can print on all those printers.
9) My new LASER printer is the Konica/Minolta Pagepro 1350W.
10) The 1350W has both USB and PARALLEL. I have successfully
installed it independently on each machine, both USB and PARALLEL.
The printer prints.
11) With the 1350W connected USB to the server, I set this machine up
to share that printer, calling it KONICAMI (the default).
12) With the 1350W connected USB to the satellite machine, I rebooted
that machine. It came up with the 1350W recognized on USB, and in
fact the printer printed. No surprise here.
13) I moved the USB from satellite to server, and re-booted the
latter. The 1350W is shown to be 'ready' in a Konica window.
Properties for the 1350W on the satellite show it is checked for local
USB so I changed it and checked it to the remote KONICAMI on the
server.
14) On the satellite, I chose 'print test page' under the 1350W's
properties. Nothing happens. In fact the status window shows nothing
under 'status'. Should at least show 'printing...' or maybe 'error'?
This does not seem right!
15) I started over on the server. I uninstalled the 1350W. I
connected the 1350W via PARALLEL cable to the D-LINK router.
I re-installed the 1350W on the server. Under the 1350W's properties
(ports), it found the D-LINK connection fine and the 1350W printer
there. However, the 1350W will not print!

Again - I am at the end of my rope.

Anyone?

no, you need the _Linksys_ models. I use the USB 2 connection and the
parallel connection also works. The KM is very specific!

my bad. it is WPS54GU2

if you are using the same printer setup under My Printers on the
windows box when you move it around, then that is probably the prob.
you need to pick it up as the shared printer so it knows it's a network
printer on another computer...
when you print to it on the satelite, it is queuing the print job up
and I will bet dollars to donuts when you re-connect it to the satelite
those jobs will print out.
