How to make a template in Outlook 2002

I am trying to save a word document as an email template but I do not see the
..oft file type to save it as. I tried saving it as a .dot and a .doc but I
will not come up in Outlook when I choose File/New/ChooseForm.

Thanks

You cannot save Word items as Outlook Templates. Copy the Word contents to
an Outlook message and then save that as an Outlook Template.

Ok, I tried that and still could not find the Outlook Template file type.
The closest it comes is Document Template or .dot

I don' have WordMail. I have MS Office XP. I believe it uses Word for
email.

And turn off WordMail as the editor before creating the message.

That's what WordMail is. You need to set it so that Outlook itself is
the mail editor, not Word.

Milly,

I have struggled with the same issue. Here's the resolution.

I normally use Word as my email editor. While this option is enabled, you
will not be able to save an Outlook email as a *.oft template. So, here's
what you do.

* Open Outlook.
* Select Tools/Options.
* Click on the "Mail Format" tab.
* Uncheck the "Use Microsoft Word to edit email messages" check box
* Open a new email message and add your text
* Select File/Save As
* Click on the pull-down options for "Save as type:" and select
"Outlook Template"
* Be careful WHERE you save this template, as you must later "browse"
to attach this template to whatever RULES you create.

I use this technique to set up my wife's laptop to auto-respond to incoming
emails when she is away from her office. It's the equivalent of the Office
Assistant in Microsoft Exchange.

I hope this helps you. Let me know, won't you?

selection for me!!! how can I add-in this type of file? I've it before, but
some reasons, it's gone!!

Thanks! YJ

You'll need to turn off Word as your email editor if you need the ability to save a message as an .oft form template.

Sue-
I have had the same problem the other first poster had. I have done all the
steps necessary--not using word as editor, etc & STILL when trying to set up
an autoreply message & I go to save it the .oft extension is NOT available.
Also, I can't edit any of my earlier .oft extrension files created over two
years ago. Do you have any idea on what is the problem?
Thanks

The symptoms suggest strongly that Word is still the editor, at least for the template you're working on. An editor change affects only items opened after the change. So, if you were working on a template when you changed the editor, you must save that item to Drafts and reopen it before saving it as an .oft file.

You didn't give your Outlook version. Beginning with Outlook 2003 SP2, users can work with most .oft form templates files only by opening the template from the Tools | Forms | Choose Form dialog, browsing for User Templates in File System. The article at http://support.microsoft.com/?id=907985 explains this change in more detail.
