How to go back to IE 6 after instaling IE 7 ??

Hello everyone;

I just installed IE 7 ok on XP/SP2.

However, one of the software I used (HP Scanjet 5590) depends on IE 6.1
being there for some reason. So now my HP Scanjet user interface does not
come up any more.

I called HP support and they told me I need to go back to IE 6.

But when I try to install IE 6 (I found a link on Microsoft website to
download it, I think IE SP1), it will not install, it tells me a newer
version exist.

Is there a way to un-install IE 7 and install IE 6 back? or somehow roll
back IE 7 to where the IE version that was there before? it seems installing
IE7 deleted IE 6? I thought it will just install IE 7 and leave IE 6 there?

thanks
Nasser

Can you go back to a previous restore point?

Have you tried uninstalling IE7 in Add/Remove?
(You shouldn't have to install IE6 again)

Thanks.

Yes, I just did. I did not see IE 7 under the Add/Remove. so what I did was
uncheck IE in the Widnows Add/Remove components instead, which did not do
the trick.

Now I removed IE7 OK, then checked IE again in the windows components, and
it reinstalled IE 6 again, so now my HP software is working again.

I think HP should have send email to its customers telling them not to
install IE7 if it will cause a problem with their software.

Hi Nasser,

Most companies should test their software and offer a new version that is
compatable, IE7 is now released so theres no excuse why companies do not
offer compatable software, they all knew IE7 was on the way, which means they
had plenty of time to prepare and test a new version of their software.

Write an email to HP asking if they will be making a compatable version of
your software that works with IE7 ?

Control Panel/Add Remove Programs/Make sure updates is ticked and remove
it there and it will revert back to IE6.

Well, I wasted half a day on this on the phone with HP support to figure the
problem.

First they kept telling me that IE is beta and so they do not support it.

When I point them to the MS web site showing it is NOT beta

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx?mg_ID=10010

support pointed out but on this page

http://www.ieaddons.com/default.aspx?cid=home&scid=0

it still says IE 7 is beta. (may be MS should remove the above page saying
IE 7 is beta?)

Then I said but the main IE site does not say it is beta, they said, no, IE
7 is beta, so they can not support it. I told HP support why not they
download IE7 and install and look at the version number on the 'about' to
find out, they said they do not have to do this, as the above web page says
IE 7 is beta.

I gave up arguing with the support on this point.

They told me it is the customer responsibility to make sure they remember
that HP software for the scanner works with IE 6 only and that the customer
should not have upgraded to IE 7.

HP makes good printers and scanner, but they have no idea how software
industry works. They expect MS to hold IE release because HP scanner needs
IE 6 for it to run. I tried to tell them that they should have an upgrade to
scanner software to work with IE7, but what is the point, arguing with HP
support is like talking to a stone wall. Well, I can't install IE7 because I
need to use my scanner, and that is more important to me.

may be MS and HP should sit together and talk one day. Why one company makes
software that uses another company software but one company updates its
software breaking the other company and no one knows about it.

I wish. Unfortunately, HP just surpassed Dell in PCs sold and is number
one. I once bought an HP computer that came with a coupon for Windows
Me. When I called for support and told them I upgraded to Windows Me,
they said my warranty was no longer invalid because I installed Me.
Wonderful folks at HP.

As IE6 is a component of windows, just un-install 7 and lo & behold,
you'll have 6 back. Tried it yesterday and there were no problems.
