How to get Windows Explorer to update CD-R volume names

In Win 98, each time I inserted one of my data CD-R's into
the drive, Windows Explorer would show the CD volume name,
correctly.

But, in Win XP Pro, this only works for the first CD I insert
into the drive. Subsequent CD's do not update the CD volume
name as shown by my CD Drive letter in Windows Explorer,
although Explorer can read all of the folders and files on
the CD-R.

I tried the obvious - refresh the display with F5 (or, View>
Refresh) but the CD volume name does not update.

The only way I can get the correct CD volume name to appear
in Explorer is to close Explorer and re-launch it.

How can I get Refresh to correctly show my CD volume names?

Also, the very same thing happens when I insert Zip 100 disks
into my Zip drive - only the first disk inserted shows the
correct volume name. Subsequent disks can be read but Refresh
does not correctly show their volume names. As with CD-R's,
the only way to see the right name is to restart Explorer.

The MS KB appears to be wounded right now and won't bring up
the article you suggest. But, I don't think that's my problem
Thorsten, since Autoplay *does* work correctly.

SYMPTOMS
When you insert a CD or DVD into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, you may
experience one or both of the following problems:
The AutoPlay function does not work. Programs or files that you expect
to start or open automatically do not start or open when you insert
the media into the drive.
The CD-ROM or DVD-ROM icon in My Computer is not updated when you
change media. For example, if you replace an audio CD with a program
installation CD and then open My Computer, the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM icon
may still display "Audio CD".
CAUSE
This problem may occur if a background service or program is
interfering with the AutoPlay function.
RESOLUTION
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only
intended to correct the problem that is described in this article.
Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific
problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you
are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that
you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this fix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support
Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product
Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs,

Thanks very much for posting the text of the MS KB article I
could not read, Thorsten.

From the tone of Microsoft's warning, I'd say my best bet is
to live with an annoyance for now until SP 2 is released.

At least I know I'm not going crazy. There are a number of
annoyances/problems I've encountered so far in my one month
with XP after many years of 98. Most/all of them I can't
explain, my Windows guru nephew can't explain, and I can't
find KB articles on them. It is very frustrating.
