How to get the W2K CD boot sector for making a bootable CD?

H. Brown

Background: I have streamlined SP4 into W2K and have burned it to CD. I have
3rd party instructions on how to make the CD bootable and have obtained from
various sites a "boot.bin" or similar named file that I need to insert into the
Streamlined W2K CD to make it bootable. This I have done successfully.

All the files come from known sources such as Microsoft's website or my
original installation CD, EXCEPT for this "boot.bin" or "w2ksect.bin" file
which is just out there on the internet.

My question: I want to know how I can create this file-- the boot sector file
that CDRWIN or NERO needs to use to make a bootable W2K CD-- starting from my
original copy of the W2K CD or if necessary from my working W2K install (dual
boot with DOS and W2K).

I have researched this topic, but I can't find information on where "boot.bin"
or "w2ksect.bin" comes from and how it was manually created. I am interested
in knowing the nuts and bolts of how to grab and save this boot information as
a file. I tried using FreeDOS FDISK to save a boot sector from my C: drive,
but it is a different size and doesn't work on a CD. Must be I need what's on
the original W2K CD itself.

I guess I should use Sector Inspector or DiskProbe and look at some specific
range of sectors on the original W2K CD and save the information to a file?
Please explain how I should do this.

Thanks,

Did you try the instructions on bootdisk.com? "Bart" has a pretty good

I saw Bart's site in my initial search. He provides the boot sector as a
download package. My interest is in the process to produce my own W2K CD boot
sector from known sources (such as my own W2K CD). I don't know how to do that
and want to learn how. Bart's site is very big, perhaps I missed those
instructions.

Based on his discussion of the El Torito standard, I see that there must be a
boot sector on the W2K CD in a certain location, but, unless I missed it, it is
not a file that one can copy directly.

So, I think I need a utility or other way to obtain the bootable sector from
the W2K CD (or any CD) and save it to a file for future use on other bootable
CDs.

TIA
