How to fix persistent wrong Hd Icon

J

JTM

I've had it before and some how got it fixed but can't do it this time. Instead
of an image of a hard drive on my drive F: I get another icon (black circle with
a green edge and figure). I'm running WinXP pro with auto update enabled and
current and a currently updated antivirus program. All the other icons are ok.
I've tried the following:

1. Changed the appearance of the icons (larger then back to smaller).
2. Changed the desktop theme.
3. Tried using TweakUI.
4. Searched all the file types as well as the program icons in Program Files
folder and the icon in question doesn't appear to be in use anywhere.
5. Searched the web for "wrong icons"
6. Repeated reboots hard and warm.
7. Searched for the icon in windows, shell32, moreicons etc. and did not find
it.

All to no avail. Any suggestions?

John

Look for a file named 'autorun.inf' in the root of the drive & delete it.

Thanks, this feature looks to be rather dangerous. Is there anyway to disable
the "autorun.inf" capabilty.

This is mostly of concern for removeable drives. Several ways you
might try...

1- Run Windows Explorer, right-click on the CD or other drive which
you want to disable Autorun, select Properties from the menu, select
Autoplay, and disable from there.

2- If you have TweakUI, you can disable it under the My Computer or
Paranoia tab (depending on version):
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

3- Disable it using Regedit by drilling down to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet\Services\Cdrom
Find AutoRun and set its value to 0 to disable autorun, or to 1 to
re-enable this.

4- To temporarily disable autorun for a specific disc being inserted,
hold down the left Shift key.

5- Using GPEDIT, click to Computer Configuration, then go to
Administrative Templates, and finally to System. Find the option to
"Turn Autoplay off."

I'll use TweakUI. I was kind of annoyed by the persistent offer by WinXP to
select what to do when a disk was inserted. It never seemed to accept that "Do
Nothing" every time really means nothing. This may end that pop up.

Thanks,

John
