Cannot restore default Folder Icon.

Hi all,

I recently downloaded and installed a Finding Nemo Theme. The theme changed
the colour of the folder icons to blue. When I removed the theme, the
folders stayed blue in colour. I've tried going via Folder Options to change
the icon but the only icons available in the Windows default set are blue.
I've tried 'right clicking' on the folders and attempting to change the icon
and, although they show up yellow in the customize panel, they still display
blue.

I have searched the knowledge base but haven't found anything of any use.
Microsoft even say that the default
icon can't be changed - but mine has!

Can anyone tell me if there's anything that can be done. Thanks for any help.

Matt.

Hi Matt,

Open Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons

Export the key, and post the contents here.

Hi,

Thanks for replying. Does this look like the info you need?

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Icons]
"3"="c:\\program files\\plus!\\themes\\findingnemo\\icons\\findingnemo
closed.ico,0

Thanks again,

Matt.

Mike,

Backup the key, and then delete the value named "3". Restart Windows.

I deleted the key '3' and restarted, but the folders are still blue. There's
only the default key left:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Icons]

and it's value is not set.

Matt,

Right-click Desktop, choose Properties, Appearance Tab.
Click Advanced button, choose Icon from the drop-down list and set it's size to 31 and press OK.
Close the dialog
Repeat the above steps and set the Icon size to 32 (defaults)

This is to force Windows to redraw the icons.

Success!! Thanks very much, Ramesh!

If I ever wanted to change the folder icon to my own choice/design/colour,
do you know a way that the default folder icon can be changed easily?

Thanks very much for all your help.

You're welcome Matt.

Create .ico file of your own, and save it to a folder
(one for Closed folder, and the other for Open folder)

Now, set the path to the icon file in the same registry key, value "3" & "4"

Example:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Icons]
"3"="c:\closedfolder.ico"
"4"="c:\openedfolder.ico"

I use the icon file below

Serenity Windows 98 Tips & Hacks:
http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/icon.html

Under "Shell Icons" section there is a zip file:
http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/images/openfolder.zip
