Try Win+M or Win+D. I prefer Win+M.

The desktop cannot exist on top of any other windows.

Is there some way to display the desktop over all running applications
(i.e., to bring the desktop to the front)? "Minimize all windows" doesn't
seem to do what I need --> some windows remain and partially obscure the
desktop.

Thanks,

Use the "Show Desktop" icon on the Quick Launch bar. If it is missing for
some reason then create a file named "Show Desktop.scf" in
\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Quick Launch
paste this text in the file and save it.

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

I don't have a Win key on my keyboard. I recall that there is another way to
do this but I can't remember what it is.

One way to do this is to right-click the taskbar and choose Minimize All
Windows.
