How to disable Windows Messenger automatic Sign In?

Hi there,

Whenever I reboot PC or enabled network connection, Windows Messenger is
automatically signed in. It's on Windows XP Home. I even uninstalled the
Windows Messenger from Add/Remove Windows Components. I looked into Startup
menu, msconfig's Startup and Services tabs but I didn't find any items that
might be the cause. Does anyone know how to disable the automatic sign-in on
Windows Messenger?

Thank you,
greensky

Assumig you mean WIndows Messenger and not MSN Messenger, disable it
from the "Set Program Access and Defaults" applet on the All Programs menu.

Run Outlook: Click Tools, Options, "General" tab.
Uncheck "Automatically log on to MSN Messenger",
Uncheck the box, "Send and recive messages at startup"
Click "Apply", "OK"

From Messenger; click Tools, options, Preferences,
Uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts",
Uncheck "Allow this program to run in the background"
Click "OK"

Brute force approach:
Preventing MSN Messenger from launching when you open Outlook Express:
Rename the following file to stop it running at OE startup:
C:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.exe
Then, to run it manually, just double-click whatever you renamed it to.
You will also find that Outlook Express starts much faster too.

Thank you, yes, it's Windows Messenger, not MSN Messenger. Surprise! --
that has been disabled when I checked now. It's spooky. First of all I
wonder why it's shown in task tray after uninstalled from Windows
Components. On my another PC, it stays being disabled and never
automatically sign in, although the icon is shown in task tray and enabled
in "Set Program Access and Defaults." Any idea?

Thank you all for the interesting information. I went over all. It seems
there are some unusual things occurring on this PC.

- In Windows Messenger, there was NO "Run this program when Windows starts."
(There is this option on another PC.)
- When I select "Close" from File menu, it doesn't close and stays in task
tray.
- In Outlook Express, there was NO "Automatically log on to Windows
Messenger" (There is this option on another PC.)
- In the registry, suggested setting in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302089 was already configured. (I've
never done it before and no one else would.)

I noticed that Windows Messenger icon appears in task tray only while I open
Outlook 2003. It wasn't start after the reboot but after opened Outlook
2003. I'm running Windows XP Home + Windows Messenger 4.7. I don't use
Outlook Express on that PC.

- Anyone knows any option for Windows Messenger in Outlook 2003?
- Is the software MessengerDisable in
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_mess_disable.htm will be a safe program
to run?

Thank you!

In addition, it didn't allow me to rename C:\Program
Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.exe, even though I closed all the apps including
Outlook, IO, and IE. (On another PC, I was able to rename MSMSGS.exe while I
was running IO and IE.)
