Windows Messenger Auto Sign In

B

Brandon

I've setup Windows Messenger to sign in automatically when Windows starts .
.. . but it does not do it. Is there a registry entry that I could check or
something else I can do to force it to sign in automatically? It works ok
when I manually sign in, so I know my login info is ok.

Hi Brandon,

1. Start/Run/Msconfig/Startup: Is it checked off?
2. Start/All Programs/Windows Messenger/Tools/Options/Preferences:
General - Run Windows Messenger when
Windows starts.
3. Have you perhaps cleared your Network Passwords? More info here:

Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2. Once there:

Advanced, Manage Passwords. Or, Control Panel, User Accounts, select a user
then Manage my network passwords.
You can also check here: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService\ListCache\.NET
Messenger Service. In the right pane, Identity Name

Per your question: The registry keys used for messenger auto-logon:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService
AppSettings (binary)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
MSMSGS REG_SZ "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

Added info/tips:

Add Control Userpasswords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

Disable Storage of .Net Passwords (Line 223) Right hand side
