How to Disable Modem Driver Install

I have installed db 9 serial port foot pedals and I have Windows XP Home. In
order to make them work I have to uninstall the modem, shut the sytem down,
start up again and I'm good to go. But when I shut the system down, I have to
go through this all over again. I think that windows is automatically
reinstalling the driver and it's tying up my Com1 port. I have broadband and
the modem is installed via the USB port so I have no need for an internal 56
kps modem. Is there a way to stop this from happening or can I change the com
port the modem uses? I tried looking up the windows folders but there's quite
a few and I don't want to mess anything up.

Thanks!

Why don't you just unplug the modem?

Well.... I may be betraying some ignorance here, but I'm not sure how to do that with an internal modem. Would that stop the auto updates if that's what's causing the problem?

I just looked inside and I guess I could unplug the card but would that stop
Windows from installing drivers? I tried removing the modem using the Device
Manager but it didn't work.

Thanks

Ok, it's a PCI modem then, disregard my previous reply.

Yes, pull the modem card out.

Hi again,

Thanks for your help, got sidetracked.
I pulled the modem card out but I'm still having the problem. I checked my
device manager and the modem was using com4. Interestingly my expressscribe
software would allow me to open com4 which doesn't make any sense. I am
unable to locate any devices using com1 using system info. It says the
drivers are windows/system32//Serenum and also windows/system32/serial. I'm
not sure but I wonder if the automatic updates are somehow causing this
problem?

Thanks again!

Can you uninstall the modem from Device Manager now?

Hi Steve,

Yes I think it's uninstalled as there is no modem option listed in Device
Manager now. I'm not quite sure that it was the modem on Com1 now. I'm using
a serial port foot pedal and I can only get it to run on Com1 but every time
I shut down, I have to uninstall Com1, restart, Com1 still shows up and then
I uninstall, restart again and then I'm able to use the foot pedals. I can't
seem to locate which device is using Com1, only that its location is on the
PCI bus.

Thanks!
