External telco modem

XP HE SP2. USR V92 modem connected to physical com1/serial port 1.

Have run 95/98/98SE/ME in the past with this modem connected. In the event,
I failed to turn on the modem, I could turn it on after windows has finished
booting. And, I could connect to my ISP from that modem without
encountering problems.

Whereas, with the above noted OS (XP SP2), and turning on the modem after
the OS boots, attempted connecting to the ISP results in XP not finding the
modem. Even though the modem is on and XP recognizes that it was installed
previously.

"Progress" is wonderful.

Didn't work in NT3.5 NT.4.0 or Win2000 either. COM ports aren't USB, and
that "DOS feature" you like is just one of the reasons that version of
Windows crashed so much. "Progress" is learning.

Kinda mixing apples and oranges in your reply.

I don't have any more or less trouble with XP than dos based versions of
windows. Virtually none in both cases.

The only reason I've gone to XP is that most new hardware has no drivers
for, and alot of new software has limited use or doesn't work on dos based
versions of windows. ...That "progress" thing again.
