How to disable Internet Explorer updates?

I

ICTag

I installed an old XP cd on my laptop from scratch and applied all sp's and
patches. Everything worked well. But the "Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP"
(71727) update causes a blue screen when I run the wizard (either during or
just after checking for malware).

So I installed another browser instead and removed IE 6 by un-flagging this
in Windows components (software).

However I'm still promped for the IE 8 update so I can't simply use the
express install of windows updates whenever an update occurs.

Any suggestions how to flag this update as not-wanted.

In short, add this to the registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\8.0]
"DoNotAllowIE80"=dword:00000001

The next time you're prompted to install any updates click on the Custom
option. When the list of updates appears, remove the check mark from the box
next to IE8. Install the remaining updates, if any. You'll then be prompted
to indicate whether you want to stop being reminded to install IE8. Once you
make that selection you should stop seeing IE8 offered as an update.

BTW, you can't uninstall IE6. It's an integral part of Windows XP. I believe
the procedure you followed simply removes its shortcut from the Start menu.
