Clueless in Seattle

From time to time I need to copy a filename as text from an item listed
in Windows Explorer.

The only way I've figured out to do that is:

1. Right click on the filename,
2. Left click "Properties"
3. Right click the filename which appears in a little white box
4. Left click "Copy"

That's four clicks of the mouse.

Is there a way to copy a file name in fewer clicks?

Instead of your steps .... single click the file name.... box appears with
highlighted text, <Ctrl> C (copy to clipboard) then <Ctrl> V (paste) at
destination.

I was curious so I tried that and it doesn't actually work for me. What
I've always done is to do two single clicks

i.e either:

- a single click, short delay, single click

or a single click, move mouse slightly, single click

This brings up the file name in an edit box at which point you can do
the copy/paste.

Of course, all bets are off if you have changed from the default "double
click to open an item" to "single click to open an item".

Yes, that's correct. Two delayed clicks to bring up edit mode.

There's a nifty Send-To-X utility in the Windows 95 Power Toys that works
well for this. (Despite the fact that the power toys were written for 95,
the Send-To-X utility works well with 2000.) It adds a entry to the Send To
context menu to let you copy the selected filename(s) to the clipboard.

Here's a download link:

Here's an article describing how to install and use the utility:
