how to change display setting without changing desktop sort

How do I make changes to advance appearance settings in display without
automatically changing the sort order of my desktop icons? It seems I have
the desktop sorted manually in perfect order by catergories and all lined up
and then I make a change to the active or inactive window or scrollbar, etc.
and my desktop icons are scattered all over in no particular order. In this
case, for some reason everything changed to very small fonts and scrollbar
but I hesitate to change it.

I have seen the place to lock web items to the desktop, but these are just
shortcuts to files and programs.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Each display setting will probably change your icon locations. Different
resolutions will change your icon locations.

I use a program called Desktop Save and Restore. Once installed, you can
right mouse click on your desktop and select Save Desktop. When your
icons get moved around you can right mouse click on your desktop and
select Restore Desktop. The only problem for you is you'll need to save
each different desktop appearence after you've rearranged your icons.

Take a look and see what you think:

Nice Utility but "Gail" keep in mind that if "Auto Arrange" is select by any
means then click "Restore Desktop" will not work.

Thanks JD for the update.
