How to block email when my address is not in the to and cc lines?

Outlook Express allows me to block any emails that do not have my email
address in the to: and cc: areas. How can I do this in Outlook and still
receive mass mailings from newsgroups to which I subscribe?
Is it better to somehow script in this kind of filter?

Add your newsletters to your Safe Senders. Use OL's Rules Wizard to block
others.

Well, after watching this carefully to see what exactly is going on ... it is
not a workable solution.

1. My Google & Yahoo groups are still being canned as junk, despite being in
the safe senders list. The rules run but seem to ignore the safe senders
list.

2. Marking individual emails addresses or domains as junk senders doesn't
really help since the perpetrators use constantly changing phoney domains or
prefix their domain with a constantly changing prefix, like the date (those
guys don't allow you to 'opt out' of their mailing lists). And the size of
the blocked senders list really gets unwieldly very quickly.

3. My primary mailbox is the SMTP server at work, the secondary is MSN,
since that was the only way I could keep the mail stored seperately without
adding a slew of new rules. The rules DO NOT run on the secondary mailbox,
and there seems to be no way to apply rules seperately to the secondary
mailbox.

Of course they ignore it. The Safe Senders list controls the Junk E-mail
filter, not rules. RUles and the Junk E-mail filter are completely
separate.

Correct. The Blocked Senders list is a particularly ineffectual tool to
fight current spam practices.

If you use Outlook Live, I believe rules will run on the MSN account
provided it's your delivery location.

Thank you for the reply. I guess that Outlook Live is not offering me
anything that OutLook or OutLook Express dont' offer, despite the promises
that seem to have been made for it regarding better spam handling and
multiple mail account management.

Now if someone can specify how I can "opt out" of OutLook Live and keep my
credit card from being billed again at renewal time, I'll be happy. If I can
get my initial investment back - OutLook Live subscription, MSN account and
the upgraded Hotmail account, I'd be ecstatic.

Talk to the folks at MSN.

Hi! this is just my problem. Please could you tell me how to block emails
in Outlook Express that aren't addressed to my exact email address but
(e-mail address removed) for example. I have looked in the message
rules but couldn't see how to do it.
Thank you

I think in OE you can set up a rule to delete mail that is not from people
in your addressbook...try that.

Thanks Gordon, but does anyone know whether I am getting these emails because
some spammer has got hold of my email address or is it because I have a virus
or a worm infecting my computer. I have to admit that a less canny user of
my computer has opened a couple of these emails. Also what is the purpose of
them other than annoyance - are there dire consequences if they are opened.

They are mostly of the format: Postmaster@........... Delivery Status
Notification (failure) or Delivery failure OR Mail Delivery Subsystem
Returned mail: see transcript for details.
Thanks

That /probably/ means that someone else who has your email address on their
computer has a virus.......and the address could be anywhere, it doesn't
have to be just in their addressbook now.....

I still dont know where that leaves me. I went on the Orange website and
they say that everything addressed to @username gets delivered. I have asked
them whether it is possible to block any mail not addressed specifically to
Joe@username.. is possible. All those message rules in OE just apply to
messages that have been received. Last night I got in touch with Symantec as
I have Internet Security which I keep up to date and they wanted to charge me
$70 for an assessment but I have done their online virus scan and it found
nothing so I am not sure what to do next.

If, as I suspect, these are emanating from a computer that has your email
address on it and has a virus, there's not much you CAN do. They will
decrease and eventually stop, especially if that person discovers they are
infected.....

Ask in the Outlook Express newsgroup.
