How to backup and later re-install XP Updates / Patches

T

timmy_B

Hi,

I would like to a make a local copy of all XP Updates, so
that if I need to re-install I do not need to download
these again from Microsoft.

1) Where are these located in XP?
2) What executable needs to be run to in-stall these
patches (say after a fresh install)
3) Is installing these patches on a fresh install just a
matter of copying files to the location mentioned in 1)
and running the files from 2)?

Thanks. Tim

P.S Sorry if this question has already been asked. Search
function was down.

If you used Windows Update to download and apply the patches then they are
not stored in any format that you could use again.
If you wish to download the patches for installation at a latter date - or
backup etc then you need to use the Windows Update Catalog.
You turn this option on under the option to Personalize Windows Update at
the Windows Update site.
The Catalog will allow you to select the updates you require and then save
them locally for application at a later date.

Wow, I've been trying to figure out how to do this for weeks. Mike,
after getting all of the files I'd like downloaded, how do I install
them. Do I really need to go through them one at a time, or is there a
way to get windows automate the process?

Unfortunately due to the way you download the files you have to installed
them yourself.
Start with the oldest first.
You "may" be prompted to reboot after a patch or not. This may not be a
great experience.

If you read the associated KB articles they usually tell
you the commandline switches used to keep a patch
that needs a reboot from causing an immediate reboot.
So, you end up with a batch file with lines like
WinXP_q098765_sp2.exe /q /n /z
Mdac_7.1_q098765.exe /n:a
etc
You can just run the bat file then, although if you are
using patches from before 2003 skipping the reboots
can be hazardous.
