How my Windows XP OEM license go in Virtual Box?

Hi,
I have ThinkPad Tablet with Windows XP preinstalled on it, I have also
reinstallation DVD,
I shell install Linux on my machine like the only OS, but I like Windows as
well and I got the Office and the other software I would like to continue to
use, so I’d like to keep my Windows in Virtual Machine on the same laptop,
normally, I have the right for it – right? Since this is the same machine
and it would be the only Windows XP installation on it, my question is from
what CDs or DVD do I have the right ( can I?) do the install, the original
reinstall will not probably recognize Virtual Machine like its native laptop
since it go with a lot of special software for ThinkPad tablets, do I have
the right to get some OEM DVD and install from it or maybe there is some
other solution?
Regards, Andrei

The ThinkPad was probably delivered with a recovery CD and not a full
install CD. Recovery CDs will usually erase the main hard drive and
place back the XP the way it was originally set up at the factory.

Microsoft permits the computer makers to provide this method of
placing the XP back to a workable state.

As for a complete re-install CD, it is OEM and you must comtact the
laptop's maker (IBM / Lenovo???) and ask them what is available.

Thank you for your reply,
yes this is a recovery disk, I can buy easily a new OEM disk on the market
place –I was just wondering do I have the right doing so, since all my
software is legal, I wouldn’t like to go on the illegal copy of Windows XP,
as for Lenovo support, I have being told by the other occasion that the
laptop is built to be used with Windows, I will contact then to try to find
out what’s available in the case I couldn’t just get new OEM CD/DVD from
internet – there is a lot of it and its chip.

Yes. The magic statement is "One installed copy
per machine" for windows. Whether it's in a VRAM
or wherever, as long as it's the ONLY copy
installed, on the entire machine, it's perfectly
legitimate.
Assuming the virtual machine is a permanent
one; Otherwise I can't imagine how you'd keep up
with the activation over and over<g>.

Thank you for your reply,

yes it will be the only installation,
the updates for virtual machine doesn’t make to activate over and over again
since one can change VM, keeping the same virtual hard drive with everything
preinstalled on it,

Be careful on where you try to buy OEM disk. There has been a lot of
"news" stating that several "web sites" were selling OEM versions that
turned out to be "pirated" copies.

Also, you may not be able to use the CD key delivered with the
laptop. Large OEM PC makers can have their own unique CD keys which
may only work with their original XP versions. Generic OEM CDs might
not accept the original key.

Hi Andrei,

Your big problem is that the portable computer is a
TabletPC. VMs are very basic configurations. Meaning that
you will lose your tablet functionality inside of the VM.
Additionally the WindowsXPte that you have is most likely
BIOS locked to the machine. Since the VM that you would be
inside of will not have the same BIOS, the disk would not be
usable.

If you want to use both Linux and WindowsXPte, I would make
WindowsXPte the actual host host then run Linux from within
VirtualBox VM Manager. I run Linux-Ubuntu v8.10 as a VM on a
WindowsXPpe[sp3] host laptop. The only problem I have is
that I can't get any PPP/Slip connection to work with the
VM. If I find time my guess is it is doable.

I have searched through the web, is there any official statement from
Microsoft in the policy of OEM OS under virtualization use?

It would be very good, if the OEM XP can be used under the same machine in
the virtual environment, say under VM2.0 by linux host. Because the limit of
RAM in 32-bit host OS is no more.
