Hi, I'm getting myself a laptop because I'm going to university soon, and I'm going to have no need for my computer anymore, so I've decided to sell it and use the money towards my laptop. However, I've no idea whatsoever what its worth. I was wondering if you could help me out with that. Answers in £ please, obviously.

Anyway, these are the specs I can find, if theres anything else that you need to know before you know its full worth, let me know.

17'' Flatscreen Monitor
Logitech Elite Keyboard
Optical mouse
Speakers
etc.

Computer Specs:
Windows XP Professional
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz
512mb RAM
Nvidia Geforce 7300GT (512mb) video card
DVD-RW Drive
152 GB Hardrive (could of sworn it was more than that)

I dont know what else you need to know but just let me know. I know the prices will change, but I'm going to be selling this some time in october, but it would be nice to have some sort of guideline to base my fundings on, thanks

Your hard disk will be 160Gb.

We don't encourage the pricing of individual's computers here but fwiw I'd say about £100.00, £120.00 tops.

Maybe a little more if you have a Windows XP Pro CD that's complete and legitimate with a bona fide activation code.

Floppy's right m8...don't expect much...hardware has moved on so much.

take alook at laptop PC's and consider they are normally twice the price of an equivalent desktop.

If your PC runs well, then i would keep it for web use and essential apps like Word etc. Remeber that if u use a laptop, u might still need to buy an external monitor (and possibly mouse and keyboard) for longer-term use.

Only consider the need for a laptop for portability. For its value, it might be worth lugging your existing PC to where u are going to use it. Battery life on laptops is still notoriously crap.

The only reason to consider an upgrade is for games or specialist apps. I'd recommend u invest in a good hard external disk to back up your essential files, run your existing PC into the ground, and save for a good laptop PC when needed.

You could consider one of the basic Asus E-thingymajig cheapo small laptops as a day-to-day workhorse for notes and stuff...but your current machine may well offer much better value for money at the moment as long as it is working reliably.

For less than 50 quid you could get some more ram and a nice graphics card that would play quite a lot of games. Set the pc up to dual boot with a linux os and you could use Xp for gaming and linux for every day and student stuff. With those specs it should run very nicely in linux. Then if as all students do you get too out of it and have a mishap or the pc gets stolen you haven't lost a great deal.

Excellent suggestion :thumb:

Another 512Mb RAM; 8800GT 512Mb video card and an extra 250Gb hard disk and you'd have a perfectly respectable machine.
