How eliminate Word Pad as Word's default save

I loaded new version of Office 2003. Word now saves to Word Pad inspite of
my going to "help" and attempting to set the default (which already had Word
indicated). It says it is saving to word, but only saves to Word Pad.

How do you tell that it is saving to Word Pad? By what opens when you
double-click the file or the appearance of the icon? If so, you need to
reregister Word. Try using the Run feature of the Start menu and run:
winword.exe /r

Note the space between the program and the /.

For Excel I believe you have to use Excel.exe /regserver
