How do you enable the Stand By button?

I restored my laptop with Windows XP. Now the Stand by button is disabled.
The shut down and restart buttons work. Where do I go to enable it? The
registry? Can anyone walk me thru this??....Thanks

'Stand by' is not a standard button common to all M$ compatible computers.
It is probably a hardware feature of your particular laptop make/model. It
is possible that the manufacturer installed a BIOS option to do what you
want, or included a software utility to do what you want.

Suggestions:

1) Open 'help & support' from the start button menu, and search for the two
word phrase 'stand by'. Some manufacturers customize help & support to
include info specific to that particular model. Some don't.

2) Download any and all manuals that might be related to your computer model
from the manufacturer's web site, and search it for the same phrase.
Hopefully that will have the info you need, in a service manual or a quick
start manual or some other document.

3) If you post the exact brand and model, someone might have the info you
need at their fingertips.

If you restored WXP from a generic OEM disc, not the manufacturer's set of
system restore discs, then you may not be able to enable the button. This
is often the case with attempting to access the internet through built-in
WiFi, if the laptop has a button to enable it, and you boot from a BartPE or
Ultimate Windows Boot cd; the generic disc has no knowledge of the specific
hardware related to the WiFi button.

Sounds like you need to now update your video drivers - especially
after a reinstall. The ones that come with XP are "okay" for getting
started and should not start with the registry.

The manufacturers WWW site is the best place, but if don't know that,
do this:

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select
All, Copy and then paste the information back here.

There will be some personal information (like System Name and User
Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just
delete from the pasted information.

This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork and
assumptions.

When you do a shut down from the start menu, does stand by work from there?
If yes (and you're able to come out of stand by OK), then it's more than
likely a BIOS setting that got changed during the restoration.
If stand by doesn't work from there, then you need to find the chipset
and/or ACPI drivers for your system. They should be included on the
restoration disk that came with your laptop, or if that's not available,
from the manufacturer's web site. To see if ACPI is already installed, look
in device manager under the Computer and System Devices categories and see
what's listed.
