How do I change the network name in Vista from workgroup to something else?
i wanna change it from WORKGROUP to MSHOME. Also is there a wizard in Vista
for setting up network sharing etc like XP pro has?

I need help with enabling filesharing so I can connect to my Vista pc from
anything, xbox 360, xbox 1so I can stream movies and music and other pcs not
running vista. I need to be able to access any folder and file. So i should
be able to access c:\ and all the files and folders and e:\ and g:\ which
are backup drives and so on.

Any machines in the same workroup can access other machines as follows:

\\machine1\sharename - access a public folder you "share" with the folder
properties on machine 1
\\machine1\c$ - accesses the C:\ drive on machine1

It also helps to have the same userid and password on each machine that way
you are not prompted for same

Thanks Dave. I'm trying to connect to the vista pc from my xbox1 so I can
stream music and video. The xbox is browsing the lan ok and it sees both my
xphome pc and vista pc on MSHOME as the group name. It works fine connecting
to and browsing/streaming media from the xphome pc. if i try to connect to
the vista pc nothing at all happens. it sees the vista pc, but nothing
happens at all when i click on it to go in to my vista pc.

the vista pc filesharing is on and i have shared the hard drives on the
vista pc too. i right click and click sharing. i enable sharing in there on
each drive and even have tried folders. nothing happens though. i even gave
full permissions to everyone and added my own user account in there with
full permission too.

Go take a look at control panel/network & sharing center.
In there make sure your network is set to:
private
file sharing on
password protected sharing on

My other XP machines see my Vista system OK so would double check the
workgroup name on both machines as just because you can see another machine
does not necessarily mean it is in the same workgroup.

Are you able to see and browse the xbox from your Vista machine?

Does the xbox allow you to set the workgroup as well as user accounts and
shares?

Don't know much about the xbox sorry...

My issue is only from xbox to vista for now. i have not checked on my xp pc.
vista does see my xp pc fine and loads those folders and will tranfer to and
fro just fine.
xbox sees vista. when i click on the vista name to load the shared folders
nothing happens. so i can see vista, but it won't go any further then
showing me the vista pc is there. xbox to xp pc is fine though.
I'm using a program on xbox that is called xbox media center. it lets you
stream movies and music from computers. so i go into the media center on my
xbox. then i say i want to browse my network and then it shows MSHOME as the
network. i go in there and see my vista pc and xp pc. i can go into the xp
pc fine. when i try to go into the vista pc nothing at all happens.

oh yeah. xbox is not doing any filesharing like a pc does. so you can't see
it because it's not doing that at all. i can connect to it fine though via
http and ftp.
