How do I turn on reviewing (track changes) in my emails?

When I'm replying or forwarding an email, I would like to use the Reviewing
toolbar to track the changes that I'm making in the original text. I can see
the icon in the toolbar, but it's greyed out. (It works fine in Word.) How do
I get it available to use in Outlook?

Hi,

If I've understood your question correctly you are asking how to turn on inline comments. If that is correct, please follow these steps.

Turn on inline comments and create identifying text
1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2. On the Preferences tab, click E-mail Options.
3. Select the Mark my comments with check box, and then type the text that you want to use to identify your comments. This text appears in brackets when you reply to a message and
use inline comments.
4. Add inline comments to a message
5. Open a message you have received, and then click Reply.
6. Click the body of the sender's original message, and then start typing your comments.

Hi Scott,

Thanks very much for replying, but no, that isn't what I was asking.

You know how you can track changes in a Word document, with crossouts and
everything in a different color when you delete or edit text? That's what I
want to be able to do in my emails.

And I can see the toolbar - the same Reviewing toolbar that is in Word.
Except in Outlook, it's greyed out.

How can I make it accessible so I can turn it on?

Thanks,

Sarah

Scott,

If you receive a message in Plain Text format, have comments turned on
(using the steps you outlined below) is there anyway to use the comment
feature when replying to the original plain text email message?
