How do I stop prompts to save an unchanged document?

I'm using Word 2003. If I open a document created by a previous Word version,
then close it without making any changes, I am still prompted:

Do you want to save the changes to XXXXX

Even if I save the document from Word 2003, this prompt always happens next
time I open and close it!

See if the following KB article helps:

You are prompted to save changes when you close a Word 2002 document
even though you have made no changes
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816473/en-us

Although the article mentions Word 2002, I suspect that it would be
relevant for Word 2003 as well.

Another thing to consider: if the document contains fields that are
updated on opening, or OLE links, it is normal to see a prompt.

It means some change is, in fact happening. Usually means that the document
contains a field that automatically updates, like a DATE field.

Thanks Stefan

It works, to a point - I wish I could just remove any reference to Smart
Tags from my computer!
I see from the list of problems that this one is a biggie for many people
(strangely, my serach of the forum didn't find all these other posts.)
Microsoft take note?

Still having problems, despite turning off Smart Tags everywhere I can. I
don't have any problems with *new* documents, created with this Word
installation, but only with documents created previously. I've made sure
there are no updatable fields that could be changed without my noticing.

The list of problems is the number of posts that have been made concerning
this issue, in the forum.

Are there any fields at all? Note that if there are fields, there are
several different rules that determine which update and which don't. See:

Which fields are updated when you open, repaginate, or print document

An example of threads (subject lines and newsgroups) could be helpful here...

This is *not* due to a damaged Normal.dot. The correct answer (as previously
posted is in “WD2002: You Are Prompted to Save Changes When You Close a
Document Even Though You Have Made No Changes” at
