How do i remove an unread message from my desktop?

When i switch my computer on there is a permanent unread message under my
login name but there are no unread messages in my inbox. If i reboot my
computer or turn it off completely and leave it for a while there is still
this message saying i have an unread email message, and still there is
nothing in my inbox.

Can anybody help? I have had this problem for a few weeks now.
