How do I remove unread messages from login screen

When I login, there is a message next to my icon that says I have unread
messages in my inbox. Is this referring to Outlook and if so, I have no
unread messages. How do I clear this message?

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. All
unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without
reading.

After furious head scratching, Nukeworker asked:
