How do i reduce the number of personal folders and contact folders

I have two problems

1) My OL 2003 has four sets of personal folders in the mail pane, one has an
icon that looks like Outlook home, and the others are folder icons. The info
inside is identical but each folder in the tree has less current data. The
folder with the Outlook home icon is completely current. New data added to
the primary Personal folder is not added to the Personal folders that have
the folder icons.

2) Under the contacts tab there are multiple contact folders (I believe
they are the result of the additional personal folders in the mail pane
because each one is a little less current) the folder at the top of the tree
is listed as “Contacts†it had zero data in it. The subsequent folders are
listed as “contacts in personal folders†The first of these folders contains
all of my contacts data. Now when I create a new contact it is created in the
folder at the top of the tree. NOT what I want I need all the new records to
be added to my current list of contacts.

How can I get rid of al the extra Personal Folders and contact folders?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the response. Prior to receiving notice that you replied to my
question I was able to determine that by right clicking on the extra personal
files I could close them thereby removing the extra personal folders from the
mail pane and subsequentlythat action deleted the corresponding "contacts in
personal folders" in the contacts pane.

I did so for all but one of the personal folders. If I right click and close
the final duplicate personal folder that will also delete the the folder in
the contacts pane that contains all of my contact data. The top folder in the
contact file is empty.
I still have the same problem of when I create a new contact it is created
in the empty contact folder NOT the folder that contains all of my contacts.

Help? thank you.
