How do I limit the number of styles in Word 2003?

I want to restrict the tendency of Word to add a new style for minor changes
to every existing style. I want to have a minimum number of custom styles for
easier editing and publication among our work group. For example, my body
style requires occasional bold or italics within the paragraph but I don't
want three different styles.

On the Edit tab of Tools | Options, clear the check box for "Keep track of
formatting."
