How do I get XP Home to 'see' my DVD drives

After installing XP Home I downloaded a Cyberlink DVD decoder program and
installed it. When I looked for the DVD in my one drive I couldn't find the
DVD. Upon looking in Windows Explorer I noticed both my DVD drives were not
listed. I reseated the ribbon cable on the drives and motherboard, then
rebooted to find the same condition. I uninstalled the decoder and restored
my system to the previous day and still, no DVD drives. Looking in the Device
manager they are listed with a conflict which states that the registry info
is currupt or damaged. I uninstalled the devices from the Device Manager and
rebooted. The Windows Found New Hardware icon popped up and it stated it had
found both drives and was installing the drivers for it, however, when I
checked in Explorer again, they were still not there and they were listed in
Device Manager with the same conflict as before. Both drives are listed in
the BIOS and never had much of a problem with either. They are both LG drives
models GSA-4081b and GDR8162b. A DVD writer combo drive and a DVD rom drive
respectivly. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? Or have come across
this specific problem before? Please enlighten me. Many thanks in advance for
any help.

Hi,
When I upgraded from a CD R/W to a DVD R/W. XP still reported the CD instead
of the DVD. I used the procedure below to sucessfully get XP to recognise the
DVD R/W drive.

Remove the ribbon cable to both drives and reboot. Windows Explorer should
report no drives under "my computer".

Add the drives (master first) one at a time, rebooting after each.
XP should correctly report the addition of each drive as it reboots after
each connection.

Cheers
