How do I get TOC shading out of the middle of my document?

I have an 800+ page Word doc. Some paragraphs have a light blue shading
(like the table of contents). I cannot print out these paragraphs by
selecting them in the normal way. I have been trying to remove this
formatting but have not been able to do so. Any suggestions?

I was able to remove the shading using this, but the weird formatting
problems remain in these paragraphs, i.e. I still can't select these
paragraphs individually.

That's because they're fields. If you press Alt+F9 to display the field
codes, you'll probably see that they're INCLUDETEXT fields.

Thanks Suzanne. When I press Alt+F9 the text changes to { TOC \f \1 "1-1"
\n }
How can I "normalize" the text?

If you unlink the TOC, it will not be possible to update it any more. If
that's what you really want to do, press Ctrl+Shift+F9. Note that the field
shading, even when displayed, does not print. But note that you should not
be trying to edit a TOC field. You change the content of the TOC by updating
it (F9). If you want the content to change beyond what that accomplishes,
then you need to enter more headings that the TOC will find or edit the
field (right-click and choose Edit Field) to change the format of the TOC.
