TOC and page numbering

My first attempt at creating a Table of Contents in Word 2002 ended in a
tangle which I can't correct. I first inserted page nos. in my document,
then tried to create a Table of Contents from certain headings in the
document. The TOC was inserted at the beginning of the document. But for
some reason, the page nos. have disappeared, and only a grey background
shading shows where each page no. should be. I tried updating the TOC, but
it had no effect. Why did this happen and what can I do to correct it?

Since page numbers are fields, they will be shaded (assuming that field
shading has been turned on in Word options). Usually, you should still be
able to see them, though. If you are seeing field codes, { PAGE }, you can
turn that off by pressing Alt+F9.

Are the page numbers correct in Print Preview (you can use Ctrl+F2 to toggle
between Print Preview and your current view)?
