How do I get patches and updates for Office 2000?

I have a new computer running Windows XP. Years ago I purchased
Office 2000 with a computer and really don't use it that much.
However, since I have it and do occasionally use some of the programs,
I'd like to secure it. I am the one and only owner of this software.

When I navigate to the MS update page for Office2000 and try to
download the updates, I get an error message stating that the
'expected version' of my software was not found. Does MS disallow me
getting these patches after a certain period? I paid a good chunk of
money for the program when I originally bought it.

Is there anyway to secure my Office? I don't want to shell out
$400-500 right now just to have secure Office products. Also, if
there is a way to do so, I also need to update the software on my
second computer, a laptop that I don't use online. Can I get a
complete download of the updates? I'm not sure if these updates are
downloaded directly from the website onto my computer or not.

Thanks.

Office 2000 is not supported by Microsoft Update ( more product
support than Windows Update ). You need to manually download
and install Service Packs SR1a, SP2 and Sp3. Then download and
install the individual hotfix updates for Office 2000.
The Service Pack modules are found on Pages 2&2 of the following:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/CD010225771033.aspx
*Apply the Service Release 1a first, followed by SP2, SP3

Are you trying to download the updates to the computer that has the Office 2000 as a resident or are you trying to download those updates to your new system without the Office 2000. You need the Off2000 installed on the computer that you are downloading to. The download needs to recognize the installation of the Office. That is why you are getting that error message.
