How do I get a file to open up on a certain date?

Yes.

You could do it through a logon script which would probably be best. Or you
could do it when Word was started first time on or after a date - or even,
if you wanted, at a prearranged time if Word happened to be already open at
that time (but that's a bit more involved).

Perhaps there are 3rd party utilities that offer this capability or something
could be written as a VBA procedure, but I know of no such feature in any of
the Office apps. Something like this would most likely be handled _outside_
of the actual Office programs, themselves.

AFAIK, the closest 'stock' feature would be to create Reminders in Outlook
to indicate when specified files need to be opened, but it would still be up
to the user to open them.

In Windows XP, you can set up scheduled tasks to occur on certain dates at
certain times. Such a task could open a Word doc and leave ti onscreen,
and/or send a message to the user's screen or inbox. See Control Panel
/Scheduled Tasks / Help. (I *think* this is available in both Home & Pro).

This is the easiest thing in the world, using your Operating System.
I'm presuming that you have Windows installed. I don't know how XP
handles this, but in Win2K, go to Start / Programs / Accessories /
System Tools / Scheduled Tasks and add a new task to open the specified
file at a particular date and time. You can make it one-time-only or
repetitive, as you wish.

One caveat: You may need to have Administrator rights to your computer
(which isn't always the case on a corporate system).
