How Do I Enable "Internet Gateway"?

J

If this isn't the appropriate area please point me to it.

In trying to resolve a problem with my LinkSys router, LinkSys tech
supports says I have something called an "Internet Gateway" in
Control Panel > Network Connections, but I don't.

In Add/Remove Windows components > Network Services a feature
called "Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client" is
installed, but this doesn't cause anything called "Internet Gateway"
to be in Network Connections. How do I enable such a thing?

Note: NPnP is also installed, but none of the other components listed
in "Network Services" are installed.

Under Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components, Networking
Services

Enable the Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client option so
that it is checked.
Then make sure the UPnP Framework exception in the Windows firewall
exceptions tab is enabled.

Jim,

I've got a Netgear router and to get the "Internet Gateway"
icon to appear in Network Connections I have to run the
router's web interface, scroll down to a section titled UPnP
and turn it on. After hitting the Apply button I restart the
computer. On restart, the Internet Gateway shows up where it
should be. UPnP is not enabled by default.

I'm a little rusty when it comes to Linksys routers but the
manuals I've got here for models that I've set up show the
location where you enable UPnP as the Passwords page on one
model and the Adminstration/Management page on another. Bottom
line is that you might want to consult the manual on the CD
that came with your router. You'll also find instructions there
on how to access the router's web interface. It usually
involves entering http://192.168.1.1 in the Run dialog box. The
default password is usually admin.

If you get stuck, post back with the model number of your
router.

Good luck

Thanks for your reply. I already had UPnP enabled in the router.

When you say, 'On restart the gateway shows up' Is that restarting
the computer or the router? I have restarted the computer many times
since I turned UPnP on in the router but the router stays on
constantly so I don't know if it has ever been cycled off-on since the
change. I know it shows enabled in the router.

Oh yes, I should have added I'm not using the windows (or any)
firewall, so I assume the exception is not needed.

That reference is to restarting the computer.

When you enabled UPnP on your router did you also hit the Apply
or Save Settings button?

I'm not sure if power cycling the router would help resolve the
problem. It certainly wouldn't hurt. Just make sure to shutdown
the computer as well and start the router first. Once the
router is powered up you can start your computer.

Good luck

Jim, what router are you using, and what firmware version are you using?

I'm using the latest firmware they have for this router. I have
Version 2 of the BEFSR41 router.

Yes, but I think the real test is, when I return to the router it
shows as enabled.

Sounds like it's enabled on the router.

The only other thing I can think of to try would be to open "My
Network Places" and click on the "Show icons for networked UPnP
devices" under Network Tasks in the left hand column. It should
scan your network for any such devices.

Here's an article that outlines the process. Scroll down to the
"Use My Network Places" section:

How Windows Firewall affects the UPnP framework in Windows XP
Service Pack 2

Just out of curiosity, what was the nature of the problem that
you were trying to resolve with the help of the Linksys tech
support personnel?

I'm not able to follow that procedure because is tells me to locate
"Network and Internet Connections" in the Control Panel. I do not
have such a thing in my Control Panel. I have the two separate things
"Network Connections" and "Internet Connections," but not one thing
that combines them. Thus I am unable to proceed to My Network Places
to follow the procedure.

I was trying to follow this procedure http://tinyurl.com/9cqcm

I am trying to get Application Sharing working in MSN Messenger.
Messenger people tell me that I need to get Windows to recognize UPnP
support in my router. LinkSys tech support say I must follow the
above procedure to get UPnP recognized, but the procedure requires I
use Internet Gateway which I don't have.

Unfortunately, those instructions on how to get to "My Network
Places" assume that are using the "Category View" in Control
Panel. Like many people, myself included, you're using the more
familiar "Classic View".

That said, double click on "Network Connections" in Control
Panel. In the left hand column, you should see an entry for "My
Network Places" in the "Other Places" section. Click on it.
That should open up "My Network Places".

Once you've opened "My Network Places" you can follow the rest
of that procedure:

"Under Network Tasks, click Show icons for networked UPnP
devices.
You receive the following message: To help protect your
computer, Windows Firewall has blocked the UPnP device software
from receiving information from the network. This information
is necessary for displaying
the icons.
Do you want to open the Windows Firewall port settings so
the software can detect networked UPnP devices? If you click
No, the icons will not be displayed
If you click No, the icons will not be displayed, the
UPnP UI components are not installed, and the installation
program quits.
If you click Yes, the UPnP UI components are installed
and the UPnP framework firewall exception is enabled."

Update.

I found My Network Places. I have it on my desktop, not in the
Control panel under Network and Internet Connections.

But the procedure then requires I use something called "Network Tasks"
which I haven't found so far. In my Network Places I have:

Add Network Place
Network Setup Wizard
Wireless Network Setup Wizard
Entire Network
then the list of network connections

I don't have a "left hand column" here's what my Network Connections
folder looks like:
http://img415.imageshack.us/img415/2894/image10zn.gif

I'm posting this because this folder is where "Internet Gateway" is
supposed to be located.
"Under Network Tasks, click Show icons for networked UPnP
devices.

As I mentioned in my previous message I don't have a "Network Tasks"
in my Network Connections folder.
You receive the following message: To help protect your

If it means anything, remember, I am not using the Windows Firewall.

an entry in the left hand column for "Show icons for networked
UPnP devices".
FYI, once you've completed this procedure you can go back and
reset the Folder Options to "Use Windows classic folders".

Also, check on the following:
Go to Start -> Run and enter services.msc in the Open box.
Click OK.
In Services, scroll down to "Universal Plug and Play Device
Host Service".
Make sure that the entry next to it in the Startup Type column
is Manual.
If it's listed as Disabled, right click on the line and select
Properties from the menu.
Make the change in the Startup type box and click OK.
You may want to restart your computer.

nothing changed.

I thought you'd broken the code for a minute. It was disabled. I set
it to manual and rebooted buy no help. "Internet Gateway" is still
not appearing in Control Panel > Network Connections.

Go back and run services.msc. Look at "SSDP Discovery Service".
It should be set to Manual Startup Type and it should show
Started in the Status column. If not, right click select
Properties and make the adjustments. You'll have to reboot.

You did it! I now have the "Internet Gateway"

But, it hasn't solved the original problem. In the Services, UPnP is
shown as Manual but not started.

Never mind. It's now started. I had to use the messenger before it
started. I'm guessing it's fixed but I will have wait until I can
connect to another person using messenger to be sure and none of my
contacts are online at the moment.

Thank you very much for your help. I'll post back here and report
whether it fixed messenger.
