Two steps.
1. Migrate your Hotmail account to the new Windows Live Hotmail format if
it's a free account and you haven't done it already.
2. Download and install the Outlook connector add-in.

Outlook Connector might work, might not. For my freebie Hotmail
accounts (one of which was a legacy account migrated during the Nov
2004 event when WebDAV was removed for new freebie accounts created
afterward), both of which were converted to Windows Live mode, they
cannot be used with Outlook Connector. The same message appears
notifying me that Hotmail now requires a subscription (i.e., a paid
account) to access my Hotmail accounts.

So the OP could try Outlook Connector and cross his fingers that he
gets access to a freebie Hotmail account. Otherwise, he will have to
pay for a premium Hotmail account (although I hear an MSN account is
cheaper and which includes Hotmail).

If using a paid Hotmail account, or if Outlook Connector works, *you*
don't need to specify the mail host. Just select HTTP as the account
type (Outlook Connector handles that for you) and specify "Hotmail" as
the service. The mail host will be automatically specified for you.

That occurred for me with the one-before-last version of Connector - I
downloaded and installed the next version and it all worked. Make sure you
have the very latest version....

I suspect the very latest version doesn't work. I haven't been able to
connect to Hotmail through Outlook since Outlook Connector was upgraded a day
or two ago. Other threads suggest that this might be a widespread problem.
Perhaps best to wait a bit until MS come up with a revision that works. The
FAQ document gives a link for feedback, but that site doesn't recognise the
Product ID, so there doesn't seem to be a way to provide direct feedback to
Microsoft.

I was also told about the newer version. So I retried the test using
Outlook Connector. I got logged in okay so I thought it was working -
until I found out that I could not yank any new e-mails pending in my
Hotmail's Inbox. Instead I got the error message (shown in OC's log)
that a subscription was required (i.e., that I have to pay).

Interesting. All I can say is that it works OK here.....

It's reverted to that behaviour after the latest update - do MS really KNOW
what they are doing? I can still access my Hotmail in Thunderbird after
several updates.....

After a few days away I've found Outlook Connector responding properly. Since
I haven't made any further changes at my end I wonder if the problem was
actually at the Hotmail end. Anyway, it means your original answer should
work!

David.
