How do I connect a subwoofer gizmo?

I am helping a friend set up a new WinXP machine and he bought one with a
subwoofer. Being tone-deaf I don't even bother turning speakers on on my
machine so am having a problem getting his working. The subwoofer has
connections to two speakers and to the green audio port on the PC, and AC
power. There was also a separate cable with gray and pink(? can't remember)
ends which I connected to the same color ports on the back. It is all
powered up but sound doesn't play. What am I setting up wrong?

Is it a software issue? Do I have to use Media player or control panel to
set up something? As I said - I don't usually do anything with audio,
music, etc.

His older machine doesn't have the full array of audio ports on the back
that the new machine has, so I am not sure what needs to be plugged in -
just the green cable?

You need to check with the manufacturer's web site support, check the
manual, and/or make sure you have the proper sound card that is required for
the speaker system.

Typically you will connect to the subwoofer the green audio port, and the
stereo speakers outs on the subwoofer to the higher-range speakers that came
with it. Subwoofers are very seldom used alone.

Aside from that, this is almost certainly a hardware issue, solved by
looking at the manuals for the subwoofer and the audio card (or
motherboard).

Be sure that you did install the chipset drivers for the motherboard, as if
you don't you may also be unable to install the sound card or chip drivers.
And those drivers have to be installed before you get any sound.
