How do I add folders to my IMAP email account?

I was able to add subfolders of my inbox entitled trash, draft, and sent.
However, when I deleted a message a line went through the sender's name and
date. It did not get moved to the trash folder.

How do I create working folders in my IMAP email account such as deleted
items, drafts, sent items, etc.?
 
What version of Outlook? The behavior you see is how IMAP works. You need
to purge the items to completely delete them. Outlook 2007 can
automatically purge items but in older versions you need to go to Edit,
Purge.
