I don't have a crystal ball, so I have no idea what was included with your
PC, beyond what you tell us. If the PC is fitted with a fax modem (as many
are) then you will need to add the fax software from Windows. This is
accessed from Windows > Control Panel > Add of Remove Programs > Add/Remove
Windows Components.

This will install the fax driver which you can then configure to send and
receive faxes

All PCs are different. If having something that faxes is important to you,
you should have read the specs carefully and/or talk to the salesperson
before paying for the computer.

Thank you. It's not that important especially if I have to deal with
unprofessionalism as this. There are no crystal balls nor did I need to read
specs since it's not something that I do daily or even monthly. I simply
asked a question and did not need comments as such. Thanks again for your
help or lack of. I'll make sure that I never send anything else here again.

So now *I* am the bad guy? I give you factual information void of any
emotions and you call me unprofessional. What would you call someone who
doesn't have the sense to ask the salesperson about features of a product
before they pay for it?

Don't be so precious! As it was I who raised the issue of crystal balls, I
hope that this comment is not aimed at me as I have tried to advise you
based on the limited information you have and continue to supply. People who
serve these newsgroups are willing to help, but this is a two way process.
This is a peer group. We are not paid to answer your questions.

The fax driver is part of Windows but is not installed by default. My last
post told you how to install it through Windows control panel. It will only
work if your PC has a fax modem installed. If your computer can connect to
the telephone line then it will have a modem. You can double check from
Control panel > modem settings.

If you have a modem and the fax drive then faxing is achieved by 'printing'
to the driver. My own web page link provides a macro to simplify the process
of faxing from Word, Word being the topic of this forum.

Thank you Graham for your help! Limited supply of information - I do
apologize for that. I have no idea of the terminology that associates with
faxing. Didn't quite know what info to give that helped you understand me.

I do have a phone line connected to my PC. The problem is that it won't
allow me to receive nor do I think that it's sending correctly. I'm fairly
good at using the PC but this is what stumped me since this is my first time
trying to fax. I did not expect the conversation to take the turn for the
worse. I simply needed help. I am not a person who likes chaos or
confusion. I simply needed help. I checked and yes, there is a modem
installed. I will also check your website.

Again, thanks for your assistance.

If your PC has a generic fax modem installed, chances are that it is using a
Windows standard driver. It would probably be a good idea to update that
driver.

The modem will only answer calls if the fax driver is set to answer. Right
click the fax 'printer' in control panel printers and select 'properties'
the exact dialog you get then will depend on the driver, but there should be
an option to set receive options from that or one of the options in that
dialog. Set the modem, to answer after (say) four rings.

The modem itself can be tested from Control panel > Modem settings.

If this doesn't help, then questions about fax should be addressed to a
Windows group as Fax is part of Windows rather than Word, which merely uses
it.

Also, although I suppose any PC today that comes with a modem comes with a
fax modem, am I right in saying that not all modems are equipped for fax? I
know that the first time I got one (many years ago), it was also described
as being equipped for voice, and I had a play with that (using the PC as a
telephone) a couple of times before the novelty wore off.

I have not seen a modem not equipped for fax for some years. Even those
ultra cheapies - like the £5 USB jobby I am currently using - have fax

I have not seen a modem not equipped for fax for some years. Even those
ultra cheapies - like the £5 USB jobby I am currently using - have fax
capability. It just has to be set up right ;)

Also, although I suppose any PC today that comes with a modem comes
with a fax modem, am I right in saying that not all modems are
equipped for fax? I know that the first time I got one (many years
ago), it was also described as being equipped for voice, and I had a
play with that (using the PC as a telephone) a couple of times before
the novelty wore off.

The modem will only answer calls if the fax driver is set to answer.
Right click the fax 'printer' in control panel printers and select
'properties' the exact dialog you get then will depend on the
driver, but there should be an option to set receive options from
that or one of the options in that dialog. Set the modem, to answer
after (say) four rings.

The modem itself can be tested from Control panel > Modem settings.

If this doesn't help, then questions about fax should be addressed
to a Windows group as Fax is part of Windows rather than Word, which
merely uses it.

Thank you Graham for your help! Limited supply of information - I
do apologize for that. I have no idea of the terminology that
associates with faxing. Didn't quite know what info to give that
helped you understand me.

I do have a phone line connected to my PC. The problem is that it
won't allow me to receive nor do I think that it's sending
correctly. I'm fairly good at using the PC but this is what
stumped me since this is my first time trying to fax. I did not
expect the conversation to take the turn for the worse. I simply
needed help. I am not a person who likes chaos or confusion. I

The fax driver is part of Windows but is not installed by default.
My last post told you how to install it through Windows control
panel. It will only work if your PC has a fax modem installed. If
your computer can connect to the telephone line then it will have a
modem. You can double check from Control panel > modem settings.

If you have a modem and the fax drive then faxing is achieved by
'printing' to the driver. My own web page link provides a macro to

Wow!! The person asked a simple question;HOW DO I SEND A FAX FROM MY
COMPUTER?

Did you find an answer somewhere else?

It may be a simple question, but that does not mean that it is an easy
question to answer. For example, I don't think the person said anything
about
a. their version of Windows (for example some versions of Vista do not
have the necessary fax software even if the computer has the necessary
hardware)
b. their version of Word
c. whether they were trying to use a faxmodem, or a fax service (which
work differently)

They also seemed to be unnecessarily upset by the responses. Perhaps
they didn't realise that the people here are almost entirely volunteers
doing their best.

It's possible that someone, somewhere, has managed to create a guide
which deals with most "key" combinations of Windows+Word+hardware and
leads a user through the basics, but
d. I don't know of such a guide. If you found one, maybe you could
help by posting the URL here. However, I think it's fair to say that
anyone looking for an answer to the same question is far more likely to
find /that guide/ than /a post here/. So if you didn't find one, perhaps
it doesn't exist.
e. it would be pretty difficult to create and maintain a resource that
that took every combination of Windows/Word/Outlook (which is sometimes
a factor here) / user hardware into account.
let someone who does know reply

OK, so once a question receives a reply it's far less likely that
another reply will be attempted. But it's quite common for people to
post alternative replies if they think they can do better. The fact tha
that no-one did so here suggests that the regular posters didn't think
they could add to what had been said, and that any non-regular poster
who "knew the answer" did not see the question or chose not to post.

If you really think about it for a moment, when you say this...
Are you guy so stupid you are not only incapable of answering the
question

It's pretty clear you couldn't answer the question, otherwise you
wouldn't be looking for an answer yourself. So according to your own
logic, that makes you stupid. If you think that's incorrect, perhaps
there is something wrong with your logic, and perhaps you are also wrong
about the people who tried to answer the question.

If you didn't find an answer and want to try to do so, maybe you could
post more information, e.g.
a. which version of Windows
b. which version of Word/Office
c. do you have a faxmodem or are you trying to use a fax service
d. what have you tried so far and/or what goes wrong when you try the
things that seem obvious to you?

Since /I/ probably don't know the answers it may be better to post that
as an entirely new question and see if anyone more knowledgeable can help.

Yes sir and according to my logic that makes you stupid too!
And yes I fig. out that I need to purchase a fax service system, cause the
make up of my vista/office 07 dosen't have the right software to just do it.
so I thank you for you time and effort.

Peter Jamieson said:

Wow!! The person asked a simple question;HOW DO I SEND A FAX FROM MY
COMPUTER? Are you guy so stupid you are not only incapable of answering the
question but you have to put your post up like it means something? I was
looking for the same thing and you people were no help. Maybe you should keep
your crapy coments to yourselfs and let someone who does know reply. Just a
thought.

If your PC has a generic fax modem installed, chances are that it is
using a Windows standard driver. It would probably be a good idea to
update that driver.

simply needed help. I checked and yes, there is a modem installed.
I will also check your website.

Again, thanks for your assistance.

Don't be so precious! As it was I who raised the issue of crystal
balls, I hope that this comment is not aimed at me as I have tried
to advise you based on the limited information you have and
continue to supply. People who serve these newsgroups are willing
to help, but this is a two way process. This is a peer group. We
are not paid to answer your questions.

My own web page link provides a macro to
simplify the process of faxing from Word, Word being the topic of
this forum.

Thank you. It's not that important especially if I have to deal
with unprofessionalism as this. There are no crystal balls nor
did I need to read specs since it's not something that I do daily
or even monthly. I simply asked a question and did not need
comments as such. Thanks again for your help or lack of. I'll
make sure that I never send anything else here again.

:

All PCs are different. If having something that faxes is
important to you, you should have read the specs carefully
and/or talk to the salesperson before paying for the computer.

in message
IS this somethign that comes with the PC or do I have to buy it
because I see
nothign that says anythign about fax where you sent me.

:

I don't have a crystal ball, so I have no idea what was
included with your
PC, beyond what you tell us. If the PC is fitted with a fax
modem (as many
are) then you will need to add the fax software from Windows.
This is accessed from Windows > Control Panel > Add of Remove
Programs > Add/Remove
Windows Components.

This will install the fax driver which you can then configure
to send and receive faxes
