How can I replace NT4 domain with Win2K domain and keep the same domain name

J

Jackal

Dear all,
As title, I need to "replace" my NT4 domain with Win2K domain and I wish I
could
maintain the same domain name. What should I do exactly? Thanks very much
for
your suggestions in advance.
[Scenario]
PDC : NT4 SP6a + Exchange 5.5
DNS server : Win2K SP4
Domain Name : abc.com / abc (NetBIOS name)
[Questions]
1. How could I migrate to Win2K domain with the same domain name?
(I know I could use ADMT to do the migrating jobs, but the target and
source domains seem ought to differ from each other?)
2. Can I first migrate domain to Win2K with Exchange 5.5 functioning?

Cheers,
Jackal

Jack, if you want to keep a domain name within a migration process with ADMT
you have to use a PlaceHolder Domain.

The process have to bee as below.

CurrentDomain -> PlaceHolder -> NewDomain.

That's the only way of doing this so far I know.
Have nice day!

You can rename the NT 4.0 domain before you start and name the Win 2k domain
as you want and use ADMT to migrate users to the new domain.

Unless I'm missing something here you don't have to do anything. If
your current domain name is ABC then upgrade all of your BDC's (if you
have any) to Windows 2000. Finally upgrade your PDC to Windows
2000/AD. It will inherit the NETBIOS ABC domain name and you will be
able to select the DNS name for the domain which will be abc.com.

You will be able to maintaine Exchange 5.5 in this environment... I
would just recommend setting up the 'Active Directory Connector' to
sync the two directories and match up domain accounts with Exchange
accounts.

Thank you veru much for all your suggestions, I think I know how to start.
But I have another tiny question, would you be so kind to help me as well?
Again, thanks very much in advance.
[Question]
If the abc.com domain is also the URL of my company web site, should I
adopt this domain name internally as well?

Cheers,

Stefan, you are nearly correct but upgrading BDCs to Win2000 will
destroy the Domain information on them, I believe. I'd be inclined (if
he has BDCs) to promote one of the BDCs to PDC and upgrade that first.
The reasoning here is that if the PDC/Exch5.5 is upgraded there are
two things that could be broken, the Domain and the Exchange system,
so I'd upgrade another machine, move Exchange 5.5 to that then upgrade
the machine that was the Exchange Server to AD/2000.

Cheers,

Cliff

You can use the same Domain Name internally as well as externally. The
issues are if an internal machine needs to be known outside or vice
versa.

If an external machine needs to be accessible from inside, (eg the
company web server) its IP address needs to be manually added to the
internal DNS. Similarly if an internal machine is required to
accessible from outside (eg a mail server) then normally it is added
to the external DNS with an IP address of the gateway and this address
is NATted to the real internal address by the gateway device.

You could also set your AD domain as sort of a child domain to your Internet
domain. it could be internal.abc.com.
You would not have to worry about duplicating DNS entries so internal users
can have access to the company web site.
Your AD domain would be isolated from your internet domain.
