Migrate NT4 in New AD domain

Allen

Dear Sirs,

We are planing to build a AD domain, then migrate the old
NT4 domain into this new AD domain.

But I wonder:
1. If the old domain name is XX, can I use XX.abc.com as
new domain name? Name collision here? Considering I will
build the new domain while the old domain is still online.

2. We are running Exchange 5.5 server in old domain. After
migration, should I re-assign all the mailbox to new user
in new domain?

3. I am going to use ADMTv2 to do the migration because I
want to save money. Is it reliable?

Thanks.

1. Yes you can, because DNS domain name won't interfere with your NetBIOS
domain name. The only problem will be, that you can not have the same
NetBIOS domain name (NetBIOS limitation).
2. You should use Exmerge to migrate mailboxes from Exchange to another
Exchange
3. ADMT v2 is quite reliable tool.

Apart from all said, I would recommend you to build new NT4 DC, add it to
your existing domain and do a upgrade (simply put). It will keep all your
user accounts and permissions and you could use ADC to synchronize Exchange
with your AD for future upgrade to Exchange 2000/2003.
