How can I repair my XP MCEdition without the original setup cd?

When I turn my computer on, I get the message that the file
System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys is missing or corrupted, and that I need the
original setup cd to repair it. But since I have a laptop, I only have the
manufacturer recovery cd, which erases all data and reinstalls everything.
How do I get the file repaired without erasing everything on my cpu? If I
can't, is there a way that I could recover my documents?

Create a bootable CD using Bart's PE Builder
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

Boot the laptop with this and open a Comand Prompt window
Use the EXPAND command to extract a new copy of PCI.SYS from the
\Windows\Driver Cache\sp2.cab file and put it into the
system32\drivers folder.

Good luck
