How to repair XPMCEdition without setup cd?

When I turn on my cpu, I get the message that the file
System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys is missing or corrupted (I can't run Windows, so I
can't access the System Restore), and that I need the
original windows setup cd to make a repair. But since I own a laptop, I only
hav ethe manufacturer recovery cd, which erases all data before reintalling
everything. How can I get the file repaired without haveing to lose all my
documents?

Try to boot your PC in Safe Mode.
The file "pci.sys" (67Kb) is a WindowsXP system file.
If it boots in Safe Mode, go to:
Start>Run>type SFC /SCANNOW (space between C and /).
SFC=System File Check and replaces missing or corrupt system files.
Have your WindowsXP CD handy for it may ask for it.

If still no solution, you can download a copy of Pci.sys here.,
and replace the old one in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
