How can I make a main folder show the unread count of subfolders?

I have several subfolders under a main folder. Each subfolder displays the
unread mail count for itself, but the main folder where they reside does not
show a total unread count for all the subfolders. This is a problem when the
subfolder tree is collapsed. I may receive new mail, but not see it until I
open the main folder. Is there a way to make the main folder show the total
unread count of the subfolders it contains? I know I can use the Search
Folder, uread mail, but I would like to be able to do it from the main folder
I created
