How can I format a CD-R, CD-RW or DVD-R, DVD-RW

I should like to copy files onto CD-R or CD-RW media, but
they are not recognized because they are not formatted. I
assume that like floppy disks (3.5" diskettes) they DO
need to be formatted, but I'm at a loss how to do it.

Do I need to purchase software that will do this? Or is
there some method included within Windows 2000
professional that can do it?

Also, I should like to start a backup procedure for these
CD's using W2K after they are formatted if possible. Or
do I need to purchase a separate backup program instead?

Thank you for any help you can offer this novice.

W2k can't do what you want. You need a "burner" program. There are
many available like Nero Burning ROM or Roxio CD Creator. Prices are
$50 to $100 (I think). Once you buy one, you don't ever format CD-R's.
You can format CD-RW's if you want to use "packet writing", which will
be explained in the software you purchase. However, you don't need to
format CD-RW's if you just want to re-record over what already is on the
disc.

Thank you for the 2 responses, Jim. I'll look into the 2
products you mentioned and get some literature to help me
understand the process better. Appreciate your easy to
understand replies too ;)
