since you don't have or can't get to a a DVD drive.

and looking at alternatives to the networking method

how about taking the hard drive out of it and putting it in the new
computer temporarily, as a slave.

or use a usb or better, usb2 transfer cable (not a regular usb cable)

It's a cable. one end goes in one computer, the other end goes in the
other computer.

You have to buy the cable.
It's likely to be called a USB transfer cable or better, USB2 transfer
cable. It's not a regular usb cable.

It'll either be autodetected or come with special software to transfer
the files from one to the other.

google usb transfer cable
or google usb2 transfer cable

(Some USB2 transfer cables may come up when you google usb transfer
cable too.)

the advert should say it connects 2 comps together. So, you know it's
not a regular cable. the marketting is different.

there are loads of them. But you want USB2 not USB1. because USB2 is
faster.
Some or all of the USB ports on your computer are USB2 so will support
that speed.

b=bit B=byte
you want to transfer 4GB.

I think USB2 is supposed to do be able to do a best speed of about
60MB/s (480Mb/s).

If you have some funny usb ports or a funny cable, you may only get
USB1's best speed of 1.5MB/s (12Mb/s). But, I think it's unlikely
you'll be that unlucky. Make sure you get a USB2 transfer cable rather
than a USB1 transfer cable. And if one USB port gives a bad speed, try
another.
