Since downloading Service pack 2 I have lost all buttons
and the task bar in Hotmail to the dreaded red cross.I am
also unable to access Hotmail from Internet Explorer.I
get the Detect Network Settings message instead.
So far I have run virus and spyware scans and found
nothing.I have removed service pack 2 and that made no
difference.I have done a System restore back to the day
before I downloaded service pack 2 and that made no
change at all.I have cleared all cookies and histories
everywhere I can find them.I mailed MSN help three days
ago and am still waiting for a reply.I know that if you
post messages in groups in the wrong format they show as
the red cross.I wonder if thats got anything to do with
it.
If I hover my cursor over where I know the buttons in
Hotmail to be I am shown the tag for them. But if I click
on emoticons all I get is a neat little series of grey
squares,no emoticons either.
Any ideas anyone?

If you enable pictures for that URL (Hotmail) all will be OK
for Hotmail. If you open IE/Tools/ Internet Options/privacy
you call simply add Hotmail.com to the sites list.

Thanks for that Jim.I got the second part done but here
comes the dumb question.I'm a grnadma new to computers so
I still need some "directions"for certain things.How do I
enable pictures for the URL?I clci on Disp[lay Images in
my mail if its something I want to see,but cant see how
you do what you suggest.
Sorry to be so slow but thanks for the help. Its
appreciated.

There are two programs built into Windows, Internet Explorer
and Outlook Express [IE and OE].
In either program with SP2, you will find that the Tools
menu has an Options or Internet Options selection. If you
check the security and privacy tabs you should see options
for general settings and "sites" menus that will allow you
to set exemptions to general rules. Also on the Control
Panel (Start menu) there is now a Security Center which has
links to manage these settings. You should be able to
enable the site permissions by clicking on the message below
the toolbar in IE. There is a similar notice in OE. Look
at privacy, then the settings button to open the window
where you add URL domains.

I've done everything you suggested Jim.I redownloaded
Service pack 2.I changed all the settings you suggested.I
can now get into hotmail via internet explorer but the
red crosses are still there in hotmail wherever I access
it from.Still no actual buttons, just a red cross and me
hovering the cursor over them to find what I want in the
hotmail taskbar.
Not giving up yet,but getting there.
Thank you very much for your help with this
June.

You should have a small toolbar message that sits just below
the regular tool bar or in the preview pane of the email in
Outlook Express that offers you the option of allowing a
site or an email to show the pictures. The buttons are
pictures and they have links back to Hotmail, so the new
security/privacy settings are blocking the pictures because
[hold onto your hat] the server would "know" you had looked
at the email by tracking the picture request HTML.

It will saw click here to download pictures in OE. In IE
you can allow the site to always download pictures.

I did all that.Still got the dreaded red cross in Hotmail
tool bar.I've clicked changed added and altered
everything I can put a cursor on.On one suggestion I
dowloaded Java from Sun.That gives instructions for what
to do with red crosses(except blow them up!)It talks a
lot about proxies etc.It says to unclick the Never dial a
connection button in Internet Options, then tinker with
other stuff.Only thing is I cant give it what it wants
because I have broadband,so I dont see the stuff its
asking for.Does any of that make any sense?
Thanks again Jim.Sorry I didnt answer earlier,a couple of
days in hospital tends to slow things up a tad.
